Ingredients
Scale
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tablespoon sugar (optional, for caramelization)
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 pound ground beef (80% lean)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 4 slices Gruyère cheese (or Swiss cheese as an alternative)
- 4 burger buns, toasted
- Optional toppings: fresh thyme, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, crispy bacon, or sautéed mushrooms
Instructions
- Caramelize the Onions:
- In a large skillet, melt the butter and olive oil over medium heat.
- Add the thinly sliced onions and stir to coat.
- Cook the onions for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are soft and golden brown. If desired, sprinkle in sugar to enhance caramelization.
- Pour in the beef broth and continue cooking for another 5-10 minutes until the liquid reduces and the onions are very soft. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Prepare the Burger Patties:
- In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
- Gently mix until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat.
- Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape them into patties, making a slight indentation in the center of each patty to prevent them from puffing up while cooking.
- Cook the Burger Patties:
- Preheat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat.
- Cook the burger patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness (internal temperature of 160°F for medium).
- During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of Gruyère cheese on each patty and cover the grill or skillet to melt the cheese.
- Assemble the Burgers:
- Toast the burger buns on the grill or in a toaster until golden brown.
- On the bottom half of each bun, place a cheesy burger patty, followed by a generous spoonful of the caramelized onion mixture.
- Add any optional toppings you desire, such as fresh thyme, Worcestershire sauce, or crispy bacon.
- Serve:
- Place the top half of the bun over the burger and serve immediately with your choice of sides, such as fries or a salad.
