Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (optional, for caramelization)
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 pound ground beef (80% lean)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 4 slices Gruyère cheese (or Swiss cheese as an alternative)
  • 4 burger buns, toasted
  • Optional toppings: fresh thyme, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, crispy bacon, or sautéed mushrooms

Instructions

  • Caramelize the Onions:
    • In a large skillet, melt the butter and olive oil over medium heat.
    • Add the thinly sliced onions and stir to coat.
    • Cook the onions for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are soft and golden brown. If desired, sprinkle in sugar to enhance caramelization.
    • Pour in the beef broth and continue cooking for another 5-10 minutes until the liquid reduces and the onions are very soft. Remove from heat and set aside.
  • Prepare the Burger Patties:
    • In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
    • Gently mix until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat.
    • Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape them into patties, making a slight indentation in the center of each patty to prevent them from puffing up while cooking.
  • Cook the Burger Patties:
    • Preheat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat.
    • Cook the burger patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness (internal temperature of 160°F for medium).
    • During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of Gruyère cheese on each patty and cover the grill or skillet to melt the cheese.
  • Assemble the Burgers:
    • Toast the burger buns on the grill or in a toaster until golden brown.
    • On the bottom half of each bun, place a cheesy burger patty, followed by a generous spoonful of the caramelized onion mixture.
    • Add any optional toppings you desire, such as fresh thyme, Worcestershire sauce, or crispy bacon.
  • Serve:
    • Place the top half of the bun over the burger and serve immediately with your choice of sides, such as fries or a salad.
