Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb (450g) flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
- 1 red bell pepper, sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, sliced
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (or sesame oil for extra flavor)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, minced
- 3 tablespoons soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)
- 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
- 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
- 1 teaspoon sugar (optional, adjust to taste)
- 1 teaspoon black pepper (or white pepper)
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch (for thickening, optional)
- 1/4 cup water or beef broth (for sauce consistency)
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil (optional, for finishing)
Instructions
- Prepare the ingredients:
Slice the beef thinly against the grain. Set aside. Slice the bell peppers and onion into thin strips. Mince the garlic and ginger. - Make the sauce:
In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, sugar (if using), and black pepper. Set the sauce aside. - Cook the beef:
Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, add the sliced beef in a single layer. Cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the beef is browned and cooked through. Remove the beef from the pan and set aside. - Stir-fry the vegetables:
In the same skillet, add another tablespoon of oil. Add the sliced bell peppers, onion, garlic, and ginger. Stir-fry for 3-4 minutes until the vegetables are tender-crisp. - Combine beef and sauce:
Return the cooked beef to the skillet with the vegetables. Pour the prepared sauce over the beef and veggies. Stir to coat everything evenly. - Thicken the sauce (optional):
If you’d like a thicker sauce, mix 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 1/4 cup of water or beef broth to make a slurry. Add this mixture to the skillet and stir until the sauce thickens. - Finish with sesame oil (optional):
For extra flavor, drizzle 1 teaspoon of sesame oil over the dish before serving. - Serve:
Serve your Chinese pepper steak with onions over steamed rice or noodles. Enjoy!
